Living Root Capital is a privately owned, large scale investment business. We believe that real investors think in years and not quarters. Being privately owned has allowed us to do exactly that. We manage proprietary capital and have no performance related compulsions whatsoever. It enables clear, bold decision making based on long term prospects of the investee company.

We started out in the investment field in 1995. In the roughly 3 decades that we’ve been investing, the world around us has changed a lot. Although our philosophies have evolved, our base tenet of seeking long term value has remained constant.

Why Living Root?

Living Root Bridges are a man-made phenomenon, made using natural resources, found in Meghalaya, India. These bridges are built by the local tribal folk, the Khasi and the Jantia tribes, who have mastered the art of growing root bridges across raised banks of streams running through the dense woods of Meghalaya. They do this by putting rubber tree (Ficus Elastica) roots into hollow canes of Areca nut palm that met halfway across the stream. The roots are nurtured and cared for properly until they grow enough to reach the opposite bank, get completely entwined with each other, and make themselves capable enough to carry heavy weight. Some of the root

bridges are over 100 feet long and take 10 to 15 years to attain the perfect shape. Once fully grown, these roots last for as long as 500 years. At Living Root, our philosophy is very similar to that of the Khasi and Jantia tribes of Meghalaya. We invest time, toil, effort and our money to invest in companies where we see value. Most times, it may take years before we can see our efforts bear fruit but we remain extremely patient throughout and never change our philosophy with changing times. The same philosophy extends to the brands that we create. We are an innovation first company that is out create alcohol brands that look as good as they taste.

Our Founder

Bharat Bhagnani is the Founder & CEO of Living Root. He is the force driving the investments into the portfolio companies and is the head of the Investment team. A B.Com graduate from St. Xavier’s College, Calcutta, his professional career started off as an Associate Writer on the desk of Forbes India in Mumbai, where he wrote features on young, dynamic entrepreneurs. This led him to establish his own investment firm, Living Root Capital, to back entrepreneurs and he hasn’t looked back since then.

After a successful career, spanning almost a decade, in the world of investments, he turned entrepreneur in 2019 with the establishment of Living Root Distilling Co, a craft distillery based in Goa. The Distillery was formed with one intent- To create and market premium spirits. With this, he embarked on an expedition to create, transfigure, and contribute; looking for the trail he wanted to imprint on the world. Bharat embodies risk-taking and an impressive work ethic which is topped with a rich cultural background.

A big fan of Satyajit Ray, Bharat enjoys art and appreciates creative films. He’s an avid reader and a keen swimmer. He keeps himself immersed in his strong sense of aesthetics, dedicating himself to achieving perfection. This directly translates to him finding the traits he admires from his hobbies to work. Today, he handles the dual roles as the Head of Investments and CEO of the Distillery Operations, which in a short span of 1 year has expanded manifold.
